2degrees launches data bundle in response to customer demand

2degrees 50MB Data Pack add on at $6 with no limit on renewal frequency makes mobile data more accessible for ordinary Kiwis

2degrees, New Zealand’s newest mobile network company, today released its first data pack, offering 50MB of mobile data for just $6. This represents the lowest prepay mobile data plan entry price point available on the market.

Buy mobile data as and when you need it

The 2degrees 50MB Data Pack has been released in response to express customer demand says Larrie Moore, Chief Marketing Officer.  “The call for access to prepay mobile data is increasing.  Our new 50MB Data Pack is the accessible, simple, and flexible entry to mobile prepay data that Kiwis have been asking for.”

Until now, prepay customers have been faced with the option of having to outlay a minimum of $10 to access a data plan on their phone.  Now for just $6, customers can access 50MB of data, good for 30 days, and can renew as often as they like within the same month, without having to worry about being tipped on to an expensive casual data rate.

Better options for Smartphone users

Smartphone users and those simply wanting to access mobile email or Facebook will find the 2degrees 50MB Data Pack an accessible and manageable entry point to mobile data.

The launch of 2degrees 50MB Data Pack creates new opportunities for iPhone users, as the punitive two year contracts first signed up to in July 2008 begin to expire. Initially locked into high-price data commitments, many iPhone users will shortly have the opportunity to consider better value options with another provider.

How to get the 2degrees 50MB Data Pack

Current 2degrees customers can purchase the data pack by texting ‘buy 50mb’ to short code 233.

Valid for 30 days, the pack can be repurchased multiple times each month without complicated conditions or the purchase of any other package, an important differentiator from current options.

When the data allotment is nearly used, or when 29 days have elapsed, users are advised by text message and invited to buy another $6 Data Pack,  If they don’t, they switch to casual data rates.

Mobile data is available on a variety of handset models, including the iPhone, and even simple data-enabled mobile phones. The new Data Pack makes 2degrees an affordable option for smartphone users, with data priced at just 12 cents per megabyte.

What can you do with 50MB?

Mobile data enables phone users to experience more of the Internet at their fingertips. Based on estimates, 50MB of data could allow users to:
• Visit up to 400 mobile websites, or
• Send up to 2,000 emails (without attachments), or
• Download up to 25 of their favourite songs.

2degrees Data Packs are available today for purchase from any 2degrees retailer or by texting ‘buy 50mb’ to 233.

More than 200,000 New Zealanders have joined 2degrees since it launched in August 2009 with the promise of bringing better value to New Zealand mobile users.

The launch of 2degrees 50MB Data Pack is another significant step towards fulfilling that promise to Kiwi mobile customers.

Is this data or data network 3G? Or GPRS?

  2. 2degrees  May 26th, 2010

Hi Andy - it’s on our EDGE network for now.

  3. Oliver  May 26th, 2010

That’s awesome, was pretty much waiting for something like that!
    Thanks!

  4. joe  June 1st, 2010

how to check how many MB i have left?

  5. 2degrees  June 2nd, 2010

If you’ve logged into “Your 2 degrees” on our website: http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz you’ll be able to check and monitor all your usage there. You can also call *100*1# and detail about what’s left from your top up rewards or packs purchased will be sent to your phone.

  6. Lee Burrow  June 4th, 2010

Thanks. I can finally can start using 2 Degrees now. Edge seems ok for now, but I’m looking forward to 3G rolling out. Bring it on.

Nice pricing structure BTW. It’s actually very fair for most users. Any chance some options for heavier users will be popping up?

  7. Martin  June 10th, 2010

Been waiting for this. I just wish that the 30 day limit was removed!

  8. 2degrees  June 10th, 2010

You can purchase more than one data pack at a time as it’s non-recurring. This means that if you run out of data before the 30-days is up you can have another pack ready to go.

  9. Phil  June 11th, 2010

I got the notification txt while away on business using Google maps to find my way around. $6 is a good price point and 50MB is loads of data for that price. I’ve only used a couple of dollars of data in the last month but I also havn’t had email turned on really limit my browsing. I wonder how much I can use now.

    P.S. roll on 3G

  10. Carl  June 16th, 2010

Gggggrrrrrr!!!!!! I only switched back to Vodacrap because of the data issues on 2 degrees!

Now I gotta pay to break my vodafone contract… again :(

  11. Jason  June 24th, 2010

Any chance of data devices being available for sale?

  12. ofta  June 30th, 2010

    When is 3g starting?

  13. Katharine  July 11th, 2010

Just wondering if I will be able to use this data plan on a blackberry 7290 to access the internet? Otherwise I have to purchase a realy expensive data plan to be able to sue the internet

  14. 2degrees  July 12th, 2010

Hi Katharine - sorry but we don’t support Blackberry for data. You can still use voice and text on 2degrees, but not data with your Blackberry. Thanks.

  15. Kiwi Hopeful  July 16th, 2010

Good on 2 degrees for bringing some more data options to us Kiwis. Pity though that we are still so far worse off than the Aussies who can get monthly 5GB bundles for about $AU 40 ($NZ50). We recently got an email with a 99MB attachment and shouldn’t have to pay $12 just for one email in 2010!

  16. Cade  July 22nd, 2010

Is there any plans in the pipeline for 2 degrees to support Blackberry Data Plans?

  17. Buzz  July 26th, 2010

So just to clarify - can I move my Nokia 5800 across now and access google maps, browse the web, albeit a bit slower for now - until 3G arrives?

  18. Sarah  July 27th, 2010

Just wondering whether you are likely to enable data for Blackberries any time soon, or can reccommend another device that has the same advantages, that can be used for data on the network. I love 2degrees and don’t want to move, but I really need to be able to receive my emails on the go! =o)

  19. 2degrees  July 28th, 2010

Hi Sarah, unfortunately we’re still unable to support data on Blackberry. There are many new handsets out there in the market (QWERTY) key-board and enable, email, internet, calendar synchronisation. We will have some new handsets available soon. One of those might be ideal for you. Keep an eye out for more detail soon. Thanks.

  20. 2degrees  July 28th, 2010

Hi Cade, unfortunately we still don’t support data on Blackberry. We’ll let you know if that changes at any stage. Thanks.

  21. 2degrees  July 28th, 2010

Hi Buzz - if your Nokia 5800 is a GSM handset - so it will take one of our SIM cards - then you should be able to transfer over to 2degrees and continue to enjoy the data access that you currently do. If you’d like to check out the handset capability further before you make a decision please give our team a call on 0800 022 022 and they’ll be able to give you some good advice. Thanks.

  22. Marc  August 1st, 2010

would my quadband (850,900,1800,1900mhz) fone be able to use the 3G network?

  23. 2degrees  August 2nd, 2010

2degrees 3G network operates on 2100MHz and only when roaming on Vodafone does it allow 900MHz as well. So you’d need a 2100MHz phone to use the 2degrees 3G network. Thanks ^BH

  24. Don  August 3rd, 2010

Can I use this sim in my existing vodafone vodem? (you know, the hocky puck like thingo).

This would be great as a back up data service after yesterdays meltdown at TC.

    Cheers Don

  25. Jason  August 8th, 2010

Hi, I have a Blackberry 8707v which I’m giving to my fiancée as a birthday present. I’ve put a 2° sim card for it, but it doesn’t link to the internet. The phone part works fine.

  26. Jason  August 8th, 2010

Don’t worry about it, I swapped in Opera Mini (version 4.2) and I have internet now. I guess the default browser only works with blackberry plans.

  27. Lisa wood  September 17th, 2010

I’m currently on vodafone to support my iPhone Internet usage. And the only thing stopping me from changing over to 2degrees is the data. While it is a good starting price. I currently get 100MB for $10 thus making yours more expensive. Will you make bigger packages for discounted prices? Every month I exceed my 100mb and after that it’s $1 per day! Gets pretty expensive in the end. If you can cater for people like me that use the Internet everyday - you get more clients. I know that I’d happily change over and pay the contract termination fee

  28. 2degrees  September 17th, 2010

    Hi Lisa,
The price of our national data pack is $6 for 50MB. However if you live within Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown you can take advantage of one of our larger data packs, like the 512MB (which has been upsized until the end of Oct to 1GB) for $20, the 2GB pack for $50 or the 10GB pack for $150. Cheers!

  29. Jay  September 19th, 2010

I am coming to New Zealand next month, I was looking at the data packs on 2degree website, I was planing to purchase the sim at the Auckland airport.
After the Earthquake, the site is down. Do you know
when the site will be back.

  30. John  September 23rd, 2010

What did you mean back in May “Mobile data is available on a variety of handset models, including the iPhone, other smartphones like the Blackberry…” when you say in July “Hi Cade, unfortunately we still don’t support data on Blackberry.”?

  31. 2degrees  September 24th, 2010

Try going direct: http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz Alternatively, you can pick up a 2degrees SIM from Whitcoulls at the airport and you can also top it up there as well. Data bundles are $6 for 50MB national pack, or the broadband zone packs - $20 for 512MB (which is upsized to 1GB until end Oct), $50 for 2GB or $150 for 10GB. Once you have topped up your SIM, just text the name of the pack - for example ‘Buy 50MB’ to 233. It will automatically be added to your account. Thanks! ^BH

  32. 2degrees  September 24th, 2010

Hi John - the context of the information you’ve quotes was to illustrate to readers what types of handsets use data. We appreciate that the inclusion of Blackberry as an example can be perceived to be misleading as we do not support data on Blackberry. We have ammended accordingly. Thanks ^BH

  33. Yung Yeow  November 2nd, 2010

Can I tether my smartphone as modern in broadband zone packs?

  34. Yuvershan Chetty  January 12th, 2011
