2degrees releases microSIM details

As of Friday 30 July, 2degrees customers will be able to swap their current SIM cards for one of the new 2degrees microSIMs.

As their name suggests, microSIMs are a smaller version of a traditional mobile phone SIM card and are designed for use with the latest Apple mobile devices.

According to Chief Marketing Officer, Larrie Moore, 2degrees customers have been vocal in their requests for the new SIM card.

“We have a significant number smartphone users on the 2degrees network and a reasonable percentage of those are using an Apple mobile device.

“We will be enabling our customers to swap their current SIM card for a new microSIM, free of charge, from Friday 30 July*.”

A SIM-swap is the transfer of all the customer’s account details, including their current balance over to a new SIM card. To take advantage of the SIM-swap 2degrees customers are required to call: 0800 022 022 from Friday 30 July to initiate the process.

“We will also be selling the microSIM from Tuesday 3 August for $20.00 (with $20 of credit loaded) at Dick Smith stores,” said Larrie.

*Free SIM-swap offer subject to availability.

You’re missing “data charges” in the “What is your ultimate priority when choosing a mobile network provider?” “your opinion” poll.

Will these new microSIMs come with an adapter to use it as a normal SIM as well?

  3. Aaron  July 30th, 2010

If I get a microSIM from DS, will I be able to do the SIM-swap with that one? or will I still have to call the 080002022?

  4. 2degrees  July 30th, 2010

Hi Aaron - you can’t do a SIM-swap with a microSIM sold from DickSmith. A SIM-swap needs to be done onto a blank sim. 2degrees holds the blank microSIMs, DickSmith holds SIMs which are already provisioned with an 022 number and credit. Thanks ^BH

Hi there - no the microSIMs do not come with an adaptor. Thanks ^BH

Hi, Can you tell me if you can use a 2degrees in Auz?

  7. Hayley  July 31st, 2010

Does this mean I can use your data plan on my iPad? If so, how will I text to get another 50mbs from the iPad?

  8. 2degrees  August 2nd, 2010

Hi there - you sure can use 2degrees while roaming in Australia. check out the details here: http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/roaming-overseas-pricing Thanks!

Me again… I have two iPhones pencilled in for delivery on the 27th, so when would be the best time to call for the microSIMs? and will I lose service for the time between asking for it and getting the SIM? cheers guys

  10. 2degrees  August 2nd, 2010

Hi Aaron, If you give the team a call on 0800 022 022 or 200 from your mobile, they will be able to advise you on the best approach as to when to call and start the process. Many thanks ^BH

This is news I love to hear. At least when I get my iPhone 4 I will be able to use 2degrees. You guys are doing a great job and this will leave Vodafone and Telecom a little upset at you.

  13. Jordan  August 2nd, 2010

I want to start using my iPhone 4 on 2degrees but I have lost my normal sized sim. Do I need my old sim to get a microsim sent to me?

  14. Aaron  August 2nd, 2010

    Will do, cheers

  15. Reuben  August 5th, 2010

Aaron I’ve done the swap over and there is no down time. Call them to get a MicroSIM delivered, then when you want to change your account over from one sim card to the other, call them again and it happens in an instant while you’re on the phone. This is great because it means no down time and you can get your MicroSIM delivered to your before your iPhone turns up so you are prepared.

By the way my friend just tried to buy a MicroSIM from DS and they said they hadn’t arrived yet, what’s the story there??

  16. 2degrees  August 5th, 2010

Hey Jourdan - if you want to do a SIM-swap and swap all your 2degrees account details over to the microSIM, then unfortunately yes you’ll need to have that old SIM. if you’re not bothered about keeping the old account, then just purchase a new microSIM for $20 (comes with $20 of credit) from any Dick Smith store. Thanks! ^BH

  17. 2degrees  August 5th, 2010

Hi Elvin, The microSIM works only on the iPad or iPhone4. If you don’t have one of these mobile devices then you don’t need a microSIM, the standard SIM card is for you. Thanks ^BH

  18. 2degrees  August 5th, 2010

Hi Haley, we’ve got it set up that you can text from an iPad with a 2degrees microSIM. You can find out some of the detail here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=85&topicid=65539 thanks ^BH

    Hi

Given that Tainui own shares in 2Degrees, why is there no Maori music content??

  20. Brendon  August 5th, 2010

I’m confused. Can I set up my MicroSIm on the IPad or do I need to first send a text via a mobile? If my mobile uses a standard SIM then will I need to use a SIM adapter?

  21. 2degrees  August 6th, 2010

Hi Brendon, there are a couple of ways you can do this.
    1) If you want to keep your current account and transfer everything over to your iPad, you can do a SIM-swap. It’s free and you just need to give the team a call on 0800 022 022 (or 200 from your phone) to initiate the process.
    2) If you want to keep you current account and swap between the iPad and your current phone, yes - you’ll need to sort out a SIM adaptor
    3) If you want to run two accounts - one for your phone, one for your iPad then (**if you don’t have the iPhone4**) the best option is for you to purchase a normal SIM for $5, do first call activation with it (so you set your account up with an IVR PIN and register this account on Your 2degrees) then give the team a call and they will do a free SIM-swap from this $5 SIM onto the microSIM.
    4) If you have an iPhone4, then purchase a microSIM from Dick Smith for $20 (it comes with $20 of credit loaded), activate it in your iPhone4 first so you have the passwords etc needed for doing top-ups via the 201 number, and you also have the Your 2degrees password if you want to top up online.
Once you’ve set up the account you can send text messages from the iPad (we’ve configured our microSIMs to enable customers to do this, but we can’t enable recieving of messages on the iPad) e.g text ‘buy 50MB’ to 233 to top it up. But you also have the options now of topping up via the 201 number or also online at Your 2degrees.
I hope this information helps. If you have any further questions just give the team a call on 0800 022 022 or 200 from your phone.
    Thanks!
    ^BH

  23. Iris  February 3rd, 2011

Hi, I’m thinking to get an iphone 4, can I get a blank microSIM from 2degrees and transfer vodafone to 2degrees and keep the number?

  24. 2degrees  February 21st, 2011

Yes you can Iris, you can buy our Micro Data SIM from our online store or one of our retailers. You can also bring your old 021 number across from Vodafone, we’ll even give you $10 credit. Here’s all the details

  25. Nicky  March 25th, 2011

Does 2degrees work off the Vodafone 3G extended network (900mhz) in rural areas? So that if we use a 2degrees microsim in these areas on iphone 4 will it pick up the 3G extended network?? Or will it only pick up the Vodafone 2g?

  26. 2degrees  April 8th, 2011

Hi Dennis, yes we have microSIMs available on our online shop. We have a range of Prepay data options, check out our Prepay offers.
