Today is a very disappointing day for New Zealand mobile users. After much delay, the Commerce Commission appears to have squandered a golden opportunity to finally bring New Zealand mobile prices into line with the rest of the developed world.

The New Zealand Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has ruled in favour of new mobile entrant 2degrees, concerning complaints the company laid against Telecom New Zealand over misleading advertising.

In the advertising Telecom suggested that due to 2degrees’ call rounding policy, prepaid calls on 2degrees’ network may cost more than calls made on Telecom’s One Rate Prepaid plan, and more than customers realised which was unfair.

Telecom’s bully-boy tactics aimed at stifling mobile competition

AUCKLAND, May 25 2009

2degrees said today that Telecom’s continued refusal to interconnect with 2degrees’ proposed local calling service was blatantly anti-competitive and a clear abuse of Telecom’s significant market power.

2degrees would like to be able to offer local “Homezone” calling services over its new mobile network.  Telecom’s refusal to interconnect effectively shuts 2degrees out of this market and is preventing much needed competition.

2degrees CEO Mike Reynolds “Telecom price plans underwhelm”

Mike Reynolds, the CEO of New Zealand’s third mobile phone network, 2degrees, is underwhelmed by the pricing plans unveiled by Telecom today for their new XT network.

“If I was a consumer I’d be asking: is that it….?” he said.

New cellphone network set to launch

New Zealand’s third cellphone network, Two Degrees, is due to launch in August.

Formerly known as NZ Communications, it’s a $250 million partnership between three foreign investors and Maori.

However CEO Mike Reynolds is staying tight-lipped about prices, but will say that New Zealand cellphone users are paying too much, especially when they call someone on another network.
